  • 509S is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seems to work most of the time. The fan works just fine. Sometimes the flapper outside sticks and don't open right away. The installer has been made aware of this problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Design change consideration Overall quality and design is good EXCEPT relative to the switch. It feels and is too small and not sturdy enough. Same goes for the knob as well. A more robust design approach is called for here. I actually purchased 2 of these units and the switch mechanism has failed within the first year of installation on one of the units.

  • Damper gets stuck closed

How can I fix the damper so it will open when the fan is turned on. This unit is 5 years old and runs very well. However, this week I noticed the damper won't open. I have to open the window and pull it open.
    Asked by: Anonymous
The damper on my fan would stick to the weather seal also. Try this. This isn`t easy, but I held open the damper, and I applied caranuba car wax to the damper and rubber seal it touches when closed. It has worked great. Spaying silicne on it did not work as well.

What does the grill on the outside look like ?

    Asked by: Anonymous
Thank you for your question on the model 509S through the wall exhaust fan. The outside part of the 509S has a metal cowling that will force the air downward. This cowling also includes a damper to help keep outside air from blowing back into the house.

Can I replace a Broan 509A with a 509S while retaining the exterior vents?

My condo installed with a Braun 509A (yes, A, see image!) when it was renovated many years ago (could be 30+ years). The fan has served us well but everything has a lifespan and it is desperately in need of upgrading and replacing. I planned on buying the 509S to replace it as it's the same size and model family. The challenge I have is that accessing the fan from the outside is very difficult (we're on a high floor). I wondered if the 509S could be installed in place of the old fan from the inside retaining the existing venting to the outside from the old fan?

Thank you for your question on the model 509A through the wall exhaust fan. It does appear that you can use the exterior housing of the 509A with the new 509S. Please contact the Technical Service Department at 800-637-1453 for verification.
