Rated 1 out of 5 by from Noisy with almost no heat We purchased this as part of a bathroom remodel to replace heat lamps in the ceiling that were not very good looking. While the new Broan unit looks good, it provides almost no heat at all and the noise is terrible. The product does not do what it is supposed to do in my opinion. The heat lamps were much more effective, even if they did not look very good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good heater/light My master bath already had a vent/light unit which was mounted right over the shower. I wanted to change it over to a vent/heat/light unit but after researching, you are not supposed to put a heat unit directly in the shower area. This Broan unit was the only heat unit I could find that didn't also come with a vent. Was perfect for what I needed. Installation was a breeze. The only improvement would have been if they would have included a template for cutting the hole in the ceiling. In operation, it heats up quickly and puts out nice heat that will quickly warm a small-to-medium sized bathroom. I would say it's on the louder end of the scale as far as fan noise goes, but it's not an annoying fan noise. The unit looks good. Prior to this unit, I just used a small plug-in space heater that sat on the floor. Other than being an eye-sore, that little heater worked great and since it was putting the heat out at floor level, I think the heat felt more "even" in the room. With the ceiling heater, the air right at floor level doesn't get as warm. I'll be tiling this bathroom in the next year and will probably put floor heat in. If you can't tell... I like a warm bathroom in the morning during the winter!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst purchase ever I just had this heater installed by an electrician. I turned it on to use it and it made the most awful noise. The motor is so loud. Of course the electrician took away the box and all the debris when he left so I guess I am stuck. It is really great looking but there is no way anyone could stand the sound.

  • How far must insulation be from this unit as it does not have a fan?

For example the 161 model has to have a 3" clearance from insulation. The installation guide doesn't specify for this model though if insulation can touch the unit.
    Asked by: Mac
Thank you for your question on the model 656 heater/light. The 656 is IC rated and you can place insulation against the sides and on top of the unit housing. Please contact the Technical Service Department at 800-637-1453 if you need further assistance.

Can a thermostat be used with the heater on this unit?

I'd like to connect a digital thermostat to this heater to maintain a constant temperature in a basement bathroom. Is this possible or is it not recommended?
    Asked by: JR
Thank you for your question on the model 656 heater/light. We would not normally recommend using the 656 in the manner you are describing. It is designed for supplemental heat and to be run for 15 – 20 minutes to warm the room before you take your shower or bath. Please contact the Technical Service Department at 800-637-1453 if you need further assistance.

can u put a broan fan in the modle

    Asked by: rj1797
Thank you for your question on the model 656 heater/light. There is no option to place an exhaust fan inside the 656. If you need an exhaust fan, you will need to install another model.

Can a 100W equivalent LED bulb be used?

    Asked by: John
Thank you for your question on ventilation fans. We recommend that you use only the type of bulb recommended for your ventilation fan/light. You should know that using the LED will not void the warranty; however we cannot guarantee the life of the bulb. Your LED bulb should be listed by a certification body such as UL, CSA, or ETL. They should also be marked suitable for enclosed fixtures. For more assistance, please contact our Technical Support department directly at 800-637-1453.
