Rated 4 out of 5 by Inexpensive and easy to replace busted vent fan Was very easy to remove old one and put in new one. Literally plug and play. Interesting buying the whole unit was cheaper than just buying the replacement motor which I would have preferred since I did not need to replace the box and grille. September 4, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Needed to replace existing fan and this model fit perfectly, is more quiet and was reasonably priced. What more do you need? Easy to install, quiet and a great price. Good product. March 26, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by it is a good product a reliable and powerful fan at a reasonable price. Will buy the same product in future. March 10, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by great price, clever design Great fan, maybe, if there is a deluxe model, it could be quieter, but its not too loud March 10, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by existing fan replacement We installed this replacement fan in 3/4 bath. The fan is strong and clears shower dampness very efficiently. But it is loud. If the instructions for replacing the fan with a plug were clearer, I would have been able to replace the fan myself rather than hiring someone. Since the existing fan plugged into the ceiling, it was very easy to replace; no wiring or going into crawl space was required. The instructions didn't say how to remove the existing fan (same type). Since we were replacing an existing fan of the same type, I wish I could have purchased this model without the housing; I just had to throw out the brand new housing; a waste of money and materials. Overall I would recommend this fan for a replacement; this one fit into our existing fixture perfectly. If you are installing a new one without an existing opening, then I would suggest you look for a model which is quieter. Our old one lasted 22 years; I assume this model will be as reliable. Rated 4 out of 5 by Over 6 months now and works great 6+ months ago i replaced my small bath's fan. i can not complain AT ALL..... for the price it sells this is absolutely amazing!! It removes foul air efficiently and works like a charm. With respect to noise level.... it is noisy, but i do not visit the toilet for reading or napping and have no problem with a little noise side-effect for 2-3 mins. I was very skeptical buying it because i thought it would not last for the ridiculous price i paid. So far so good... August 21, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Loud but work well in smaller bath. Have this in both baths. Works great in 40 sq. ft. bath. Noisy is my complaint since it is next to my TV room & have to turn tv up when it is on. Builders also put same model Broan 688 k in my larger bath, 80- to 85 sq ft. I understand why it seems much quieter now. 50 cfm not enough power. No suction. July 30, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Motor bearings fail. The bearings fail and the motor seizes up after a few years. I have several installed in my apartment building and I have to replace a motor unit every couple years. Higher quality bearings/lubricant should be used. Mike June 11, 2013

    Trying to uprgrade 688-h/663-h

Looking at upgrade kits for 688-h/663-h for home built in 1989 that is rated at 50cfm and 2 sones. Was looking at broan 690 which states sound reduction up to 50% but it is listed at 3 sones? Is that correct? My current fan sure is noisy, so would this "upgrade" be noisier?

    Answer:
Thank you for your question on the Broan model 688-H/663-H. A number of years ago, HVI (Home Ventilating Institute) changed the way they rated all fans for sone levels. This fan may have been originally rated at 2.0 sones, but when HVI changed their procedures, the sone rating changed to 4.0 sones. Our fans did not change in any way, only their procedures for testing the fans for sones changed.
The 688-H would be compatible with the 690 upgrade kit. The 688 is now rated at 50 cfm's with 4.0 sones. The upgrade kit will give you 60 cfm's with 3.0 sones. If you have further questions, please contact Technical Support at 800-637-1453.

    Broan 688-h/663-h Sones

    Seeking Quiet
     on 688
We have a (probably) 25 year old Broan 688-h/663-h in our shower that sounds like a jetliner every time it runs. The housing lists it at 50 CFM and 2.0 Sones, which seems impossible. I'm looking at replacement fans with the same housing size, but every one I've found has higher listed Sones (3.5-6.0). Do you have any suggestions for quieter replacements or perhaps adjustments/repairs that could be made to the existing fan to help it run at 2.0 Sones as indicated? Thanks.

Thank you for your question on the model 688-H/663-H exhaust fan. For a quiet and strong fan replacement that is easily done from the room side, check out model EZ80N made for NuTone distribution. The design of this model allows you to remove your old fan, connect to your 3" duct and connect to your existing wiring all from inside your bathroom.  Please contact the Technical Service Department at 800-637-1453 with questions.

    Answer:
Thank you for your question on the model 688 exhaust fan and 678 exhaust fan/light. You can upgrade from a 688 to a 678 but you would need to completely remove the 688 from the ceiling to replace it with the 678. You would also need to enlarge the hole in the ceiling and replace the three inch duct work with four inch. Please contact the Technical Service Department at 800-637-1453 for further assistance.

Thank you for your question on the model 688 exhaust system. You cannot use the C350BN in the 688H. The fan assembly for the 688H is part number 97012026 and you can get it through the “Shop for Parts” link at the top of our web site page or by contacting Customer Service at 1-800-558-1711.
